  Feeding an older baby.

Once the baby is nibbling on solids at around 6/7 weeks you can try introducing new things for him/her to try. Always continue with the formula, even though baby is eating solids.

All babies will be different & what one squirrel loves to eat, another will hate.

ALWAYS SUPERVISE WHEN THEY ARE TRYING FOODS FOR THE FIRST TIME, THEY CAN EASILY CHOKE.

Use common sense when feeding foods for the first time, feed softer foods then work up to the harder to eat foods

Below is a list of foods that squirrels enjoy.(this list is not exhaustive).

  • Kale

  • Romaine lettuce

  • Sugar snaps

  • Sweet potato

  • Chestnut mushrooms

  • Brussels

  • Broccoli

  • Cauliflower

  • Apple (no pips

  • Seedless grapes (red seem to be the favourite) Peel for babies.

  • Blueberries,Raspberries,strawberries.

  • Coconut

NUTS

Hazelnuts, walnuts, pecan, Almond.

(you will have to crack them at first until their teeth are strong enough to crack nuts themselves)

PLEASE DO NOT GIVE :

Peanuts, sunflower seeds, monkey nuts or pine nuts to babies.....They are way to high in phosphorous and will stop them from absorbing the much needed calcium for their bones.

Once they are older you can give them these items as a rare treat only.

They can be given to the wild squirrels or your released squirrels as they are better at controlling their own diet in the wild.

Every couple of days you will need to go foraging for the squirrel in your care.

You can collect squirrel 'safe to eat' items that are in season.

Watch your local squirrels to see what they are eating!

Rosehips are a favourite as are the helicopter seeds that you will find on Maple and Sycamore trees.

You will also need to collect branches every few days for them to chew/eat.

They love Oak, Sycamore, Maple & Beech branches.

It is such a joy to watch them enjoy what is natural for them to eat.

Fresh water should always be available (unless they are tiny babies)

You can add a calcium supplement to the water to help with calcium deficiency

We use Zolcal D

Squirrels should also be supplied with items like Cuttle bone & Antlers to obtain vits/mins & also to help with their teeth.
